LX under Construction, 2018 – 2024

Desde 2018, tenho trabalhado no projecto LX under Construction, que aborda as rápidas alterações em Lisboa e na sua área metropolitana.

Logo após a minha chegada, observei a mudança estrutural em Lisboa e as suas consequências culturais e sociais enquanto procurava um apartamento. Ruas inteiras e bairros foram comprados por investidores, reabilitados e revendidos a preços elevados. A população antiga teve que migrar para os subúrbios, uma vez que a renda de um apartamento renovado frequentemente excede o salário mensal de um trabalhador.

Os actuais projectos de construção em grande escala estão a criar uma nova hierarquia territorial e um novo conjunto de centros que se sobrepõem ou deslocam os centros existentes. A desindustrialização, o deslocamento e a transformação de uma sociedade industrial para uma sociedade de serviços são indicadores do desenvolvimento urbano da metrópole de Lisboa.

Nas minhas fotografias, procuro reflectir as dinâmicas da mudança urbana em Lisboa e questionar questões como habitação, espaço público, mobilidade e património cultural.

Since 2018, I have been working on LX under Construction, a project about the rapid changes in Lisbon and the metropolitan area.
Immediately after my arrival, I noticed the structural change in Lisbon and its cultural and social consequences while looking for an apartment. Entire streets and neighbourhoods were bought up by investors, redeveloped, and resold at a high price. The old-established population had to migrate to the suburbs, since the rent for a renovated apartment now often exceeds the monthly wage of a worker.


Current large-scale construction projects are leading to a new territorial hierarchy and a new cluster of centers that overlap with or displace existing centers. Deindustrialization, displacement, and the transformation from an industrial to a service society are indicators of the urban development of the Lisbon metropolis.


In my photographs, I try to reflect the dynamics of urban change in Lisbon and question isseus such as housing, public space, mobility, and cultural heritage.

Out”, organizada pela Associação CC11, com curadoria de Maria Mann, patente na Galeria de Santa Maria Maior, na Rua da Madalena, 147, em Lisboa, de 4 de julho a 10 de agosto de 2024 (de 2.ª a sábado, das 15:00 às 20:00).

Martin Zeller, nasceu em 1961 em Mannheim, Alemanha, estudou design de comunicação em Darmstadt. A sua carreira na fotografia começou com o projecto (412 – 432, 1990), uma jornada fotográfica ao longo do rio Reno à noite, pelo qual recebeu o European Photography Award. Mudou-se para Berlim em 1993, explorando a paisagem urbana da cidade no trabalho “Berlin” (1997), antes de se aprofundar nas complexidades da imagem com “The Transfigured Night” (2002).

Os projectos internacionais de Zeller prosseguiram com “Roma” (1999) e “China Transition” (2003), apoiados por vários prémios e bolsas. De 2004 a 2008, focou-se em Hong Kong com “The Diagonal Mirror – Space and Time in Photographing Hong Kong”, exibido no Museu de Arte de Mannheim em 2009. Mais tarde colaborou com o Conselho de Artes da Suíça, Pro Helvetia, em “Foodscape”, explorando o intercâmbio cultural entre a Suíça e a China.

Desde 2010, Zeller colabora com a artista macaense Sou Vai Keng em projectos artísticos, começando com “the back side of the eye – Reflections on Edvard Munch’s work” (2010-2012), seguido de “New Gardens” (2011-2014). O seu trabalho tem sido exibido internacionalmente, incluindo Hong Kong, Berlim, Munique, Basileia e Lisboa. Desde 2018, o seu projecto em curso “LX Under Construction” examina as rápidas transformações de Lisboa e da sua área metropolitana, através da sua fotografia e das narrativas de Sou.

Martin Zeller, born in 1961 in Mannheim, Germany, studied communications design at the College of Design in Darmstadt. His career in photography began with his project (412 – 432, 1990), a photographic journey along the river Rhine at night, for which he received the European Photography Award. Moving to Berlin in 1993, Zeller explored the city’s urban landscape in his work “Berlin” (1997), before delving into the complexities of imagery with “The Transfigured Night” (2002).

Zeller’s international projects continued with “Roma” (1999) and “China Transition” (2003), supported by various prizes and grants. From 2004 to 2008, he focused on Hong Kong for “The Diagonal Mirror – Space and Time in Photographing Hong Kong,” exhibited at the Museum of Art in Mannheim in 2009. He later collaborated with the Swiss Arts Council Pro Helvetia on “Foodscape,” exploring Swiss-Chinese cultural exchange.

Since 2010, Zeller has partnered with Macau artist Sou Vai Keng on artistic endeavors, beginning with “the back side of the eye – Reflections on Edvard Munch’s work” (2010-2012), followed by “New Gardens” (2011-2014). Their work has been showcased internationally, including exhibitions in Hong Kong, Berlin, Munich, Basel, and Lisbon. Since 2018, their ongoing project “LX Under Construction” examines the rapid transformations of Lisbon and its metropolitan area through Zeller’s photography and Sou’s narratives.

Tive o privilégio de viajar para muitos países durante a minha carreira como diretora de fotografia. Foram inúmeras as vezes em que, em passeios com os fotógrafos locais, notava algo que me parecia raro ou num detalhe simplesmente encantador da vida quotidiana. No entanto, a maior parte das vezes, os fotógrafos pareciam considerá-lo apenas “normal”.

Mas ao fazer workshops com fotógrafos que não são do seu país de origem, o resultado é frequentemente muito diferente. Existe um olhar fresco, uma admiração pelo meio envolvente e o apreço pela novidade de tudo isto. E essas imagens, quando destinadas à publicação noutras partes do mundo, enriquecem a cultura e a educação visual de todos.

Esta exposição é o resultado deste olhar de fotógrafos de outros países, que fotografam aqui em Portugal. Que veem as complexidades, as idiossincrasias ou a beleza de uma terra visualmente e culturalmente rica. É Portugal visto por dentro a partir de fora.

I’ve had the privilege of traveling to many countries during my career as a director of photography. There have been countless times when, on walking tours with the local photographers, I noticed something that seemed to me exotic or just simply a lovely detail of daily life. However, oftentimes the photographers seemed to consider it just ‘normal’.

But while doing workshops with photographers who are not from their home country the result is often very different. It is this fresh eye, this wonder at the surroundings and appreciation for the newness of it all. And these images, when destined for publication in other areas of the world, enrich everyone’s culture, and visual education.

This exhibit is the result of photographers from other countries who photograph here in Portugal. Who see the intricacies, idiosyncrasies or the beauty of a land that is visually and culturally rich. It is Portugal seen inside from the outside.

Num período do ano em que a cidade de Lisboa e o país registam um recorde do número de turistas estrangeiros que nos visitam, a CC11 desafiou a curadora americana Maria Mann a organizar uma exposição de fotografia com autores estrangeiros, que nos mostrassem o seu olhar sobre a cidade e o país, mas que se distinguisse das imagens estereotipadas que o turismo promove. Na Galeria Santa Maria Maior e no espaço CC11@IMAGO, vamos poder descobrir como olham Portugal, de fora para dentro, cinco fotógrafos de nacionalidades diferentes: o canarino Francisco Seco, o argentino Horacio Villalobos, o luxemburguês Marc Schroeder, o alemão Martin Zeller e o romeno Mircea Albutiu. Esta exposição oferece uma visão única de cada autor, revelando perspectivas inesperadas e profundas sobre a cultura, paisagens e vida quotidiana de Portugal, destacando aspectos que muitas vezes passam despercebidos ao olhar apressado dos turistas.

At a time of year when the city of Lisbon and the country as a whole record a peak in the number of foreign tourists visiting us, CC11 challenged the American curator Maria Mann to organize a photography exhibition featuring foreign authors, showcasing their perspective on the city and the country, but distinguishing itself from the stereotypical images promoted by tourism. At the Santa Maria Maior Gallery and the CC11@imago space, we will be able to discover how five photographers from different nationalities view Portugal from inside out: the Canarian Francisco Seco, the Argentine Horacio Villalobos, the Luxembourger Marc Schroeder, the German Martin Zeller, and the Romanian Mircea Albutiu. This exhibition offers a unique vision from each author, revealing unexpected and profound perspectives on Portugal’s culture, landscapes, and daily life, highlighting aspects that often go unnoticed by the hurried eyes of tourists.
